HORSEGRAM (GAITH) (MANDAKINI VALLEY)

Horse gram is a lesser-known legume crop, sometimes brown and black in colour. This particular crop dwells from pristine Mandakini valley in Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand. Mandakini valley is a U shaped valley which roughly starts from Kedarnath shrine.Kulath is consumed as a whole seed made into a popular curry in the mountains, particularly in winters, as sprouts and as a stuffing in chapatis.It is the most protein-rich legume found and is plentiful in trace minerals like iron, calcium, molybdenum, phosphorous and amino acids. Raw Horse gram is particularly rich in polyphenols, flavonoids and proteins It is known to have a lot of curative properties such as treating asthma, bronchitis, stones, urinary problems and menstrual problems etc. It is known to lower glycemic index and is beneficial for diabetics. It can reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol that promotes heart health and weight loss.
